for this very special workshop

Creating Character through Music

Singing is one of the most intense and intimate forms of character creation available to a performer. In song, a character is revealed to us in complete emotional nakedness. The honesty of that can make it feel like we are these characters, that this music was written specifically for us. Giving you the power to capture that feeling of emotional connection in your writing is what this workshop is about.

During this 3-day masterclass, you will learn to create full, emotional characters through singing. Using basic acting skills, song text analysis and performance, I will help you feel the pain of your protagonist’s guilt …by singing Johny Cash’s “Hurt”. How to empathise with your character’s relief by singing “At Last, my love has come along” or to wear the weight of their abandonment by singing “You are my Sunshine”.

Are you struggling to write the climax of your story? Can’t figure out how your characters react in difficult circumstances? With these skills, you will see the world as your character does, getting them off the page and into a real world of emotion and reaction.

You will leave this masterclass with the dramatic tools to step into your character’s psyche, to feel the reality of their emotions and enter their world. I will teach you to use music’s secrets to bring emotional truth to your writing.

This class is limited to 8 students in order to offer a small, safe, creative environment, and lots of one to one attention. Don’t miss out! Register now to reserve your space.

Award winning writer Kirstin Zhang will be visiting Vienna, from Scotland, this August. Don’t miss the chance to take one of her inspiring and fun workshops on Saturday, August 19th.

For the first time ever, Write Now is offering a writing workshop for children!

Creating and Using Place in Writing

Flaubert drew detailed maps of the fictional world inhabited by Madame Bovary, Joyce said of his masterpiece ‘Ulysses, “I want to give a picture of Dublin so complete that if the city suddenly disappeared from the earth it could be reconstructed out of my book, while the vast, empty territory of J. M. Coetzee’s ‘Waiting for the Barbarians’ is never named.

Place is critical to a narrative, but it is more than just setting. Join us for a Saturday afternoon workshop to explore place as an important element of creative writing.

Through writing exercises and discussion we’ll find ways to improve our ability to draw the reader into our text, to use it to generate plot and create narrative tension. You’ll come away with techniques not only to help build a place that is rich with sensory details, but also an understanding of how to mine the full potential of this element.

2 Day Fiction/Memoir Workshop: Writing from your life:

Often writers chose to explore their own life experiences and memories. To draw on themes, characters, and details from one’s own life can result in a rich array of material from which to work and create. Award winning writer, Ardashir Vakil will lead this two day workshop which is suitable for writers of all levels from beginner to published. The workshop itself will consist of three main strands:

* Writing exercises in which all the participants, including Ardu, will write for anything from 5 to 20 minutes, then read out their work to the group for short feedback;

* One or two short texts designed to be analysed for what they can teach us in terms of creative writing skills;

* Pre-prepared extracts of the participants’ own writing (c. 1,000 to 1,500 words) brought to the workshops, which participants will get a chance to read to the group and receive feedback both from Ardu and their peers.

Questions on issues such as plot, character, narrative technique and voice will be discussed throughout the workshop, but Ardu will also make room to address any outstanding questions that participants might want to discuss during the intervals in each session.
