Workshop Descriptions

READING OUT LOUD WITH IMPACT – December 2, 2018

There is something powerful about the feeling of being in front of a group of people, confidently leading them through your story, and keeping their attention until the final sentence.

A great story is certainly a factor but equally important is your delivery. Factors to consider are:

  • A good introduction sets the tone
  • Knowing your material
  • Breath support
  • Diction
  • Pacing
  • Enunciation
  • Emphasis
  • Varying sentence length
  • Rhythm
  • Posture
  • Staying relaxed

Join us on Sunday, December 2, from 2-4:30 for the workshop that will teach you how to become a better (out loud) reader.

Instructor, Catrina Poor, will start the session with an overview of tips and things to think about. Following, each student will have a few chances to read their work and receive feedback from Catrina and the group. Students will also have the chance to break into pairs and practice.

The workshop is limited to 8 participants to ensure multiple opportunities to read.

Bring a story you have written (fiction, non-fiction, memoir, personal essay). The length isn’t important, as you will read excerpts of your choice. If you aren’t a writer but want to improve your reading, feel free to bring a piece of your choice!

Who should attend this workshop?

  • Writers who want to participate in open mic sessions
  • Writers who are published and do book readings
  • Writers who wish to read their stories for radio shows

  • Anyone who wants to improve their skills and confidence

COPYWRITING: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO GET STARTED

THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL

THIS WORKSHOP WAS SO SUCCESSFUL WHEN WE OFFERED IT IN THE SPRING, WE ARE RUNNING IT AGAIN!

Join professional copywriter and journalist, Matt Campelli for an exciting intensive weekend workshop to learn the ins and outs of copywriting.

Copywriting has its perks. Being paid for creative work that you can do from anywhere in the world (the beach?) sounds like an appealing option, particularly if you’ve fallen out of love with your 9-5. And there’s plenty of work – if you know how and where to get it.

But (there’s always a but), you need to have the skills to deliver what paying clients want. Plus, you’ll have to learn how to position yourself to win customers in an increasingly crowded marketplace.

During this two-day copywriting workshop, you will learn:

  • The essential copywriting toolkit

  • Why stories are crucial for copywriters – and how to use them

  • How to address client pain points

  • What paying clients are looking for, and how to position yourself to win their business

Date: October 13 & 14 (Note this is a two-day workshop, attendance is required on both days)

Time: 2:00-5:00

Location: TBA, In Vienna

Fee:€120

WRITING INTO THE DARKNESS
“Who knows the Heart of a man and what moves in that darkness.”
James Bridie, Scottish playwright (1888 – 1951)
Bridie worked on several films with Alfred Hitchcock. Hitchcock was the master of high tension, which is often viewed as the ‘engine’ of any narrative. But while it’s important, it is something else that draws us as writers and readers into a story and persuades us to pursue it to the end.
This workshop will encourage writers to explore what is at the heart of their narrative, whether it is fiction or non-fiction, enhancing their own engagement with the text and allowing them to create a narrative that truly engages the reader.

Kirstin Zhang has done many workshops for WriteNow and each one is a gem!

Date: Sunday October 21, 2018

Time: 2:00-5:00

Location: TBA, In Vienna

Fee: €75

This workshop is limited to 10 participants

BRAND JOURNALISM

“Old-school public relations is dead. If companies want to create a connection with their ideal customers they have to be authentic – and communicating in hackneyed PR terminology and jargon doesn’t cut it any more. More objective storytelling, valuable content and thought-leadership is what captures the interest of modern buyers. That’s why large corporations are hiring trained journalists, building their own newsrooms and developing brand journalism strategies as part of their marketing plans. In this two-day workshop, discover why brand journalism is increasingly being prioritised by the world’s most successful corporations – and what it takes to be a brand journalist.”
